Before the fast started, one of the participants was talking about a baking night they had already planned with friends and it gave me something to think about.

How do you get 40 days in a row where you don’t have any thing planned that will interfere with the fast?

Luckily, someone else had the answer. The fast is an exercise in living life delibrately. Normal life easily becomes a whirlwind of getting blown from one responsibility or craving to the next. People who do the dopamine fast are looking for control.

The problem is that we can learn to control our desires, but we will always have some responsibilities.

I think this will play out differently for different people but for some people like me who don’t like imposing their dietary restrictions on others, it is fine to take a holiday from the dopamine fast.

These last two days I went to visit my relatives, and of course there is all kinds of good food being served. I am normally a pretty healthy eater and I feel a bit bad saying no to everything, so I just let myself off the hook.

I was still careful about not having seconds of everything and I stayed away from beer and coffee, but it went off smoothly.  The main breakdown was eating pastries and having a can of pop.

The interesting thing is that it quickly felt like too much sugar. I don’t normally eat pastries in my day to day life, so that would have been a lot at any time, but this time my stomache was bothering me by the time  I got home. Then, when I got home, I immediately started craving sweets!

This makes me really want to extend my detox to 60 days, as it is sad that just a few squares would reignite my cravings. However, I think that  I will always want more after an indulgence, so the holiday is also good becasue it takes some self control to get back on track.

Having this little loop hole, also means that I have to watch myself and not allow my brain to play any tricks on me to create more loop holes as coffee has really been on my mind that last few days.

I did manage to stop eating when I got home, although I did go to bed early. I got up early this morning and did my stretches too even though I didn’t write a to do list yesterday.

My flu from a week ago still hasn’t completely gone away. That, combined with my long sleep  may be effecting me today and making me tired. Or, it could have been all that sugar???
